GREEN SPACE

Existing reservoirs:

The following acres reflect the respective sizes of the Authority's five drinking water reservoirs:

  • Tussahaw Reservoir - 1,466 acres
  • Upper Towaliga (Ed L. Cole) Reservoir - 1,100 acres
  • Lower Towaliga (Robert W. Strickland) Reservoir - 121 acres
  • Long Branch (James H. Rowland) Reservoir - 277 acres
  • Indian Creek (S.H. Gardner) Reservoir - 209 acres

Mitigation sites:

  • Reservoir Buffer - 445 acres
  • Wetlands - 1,336 acres

Mitigation sites for Tussahaw Reservoir:

  • Reservoir Buffer - 1,045 acres
  • Wetlands - 639 acres
  • Streams - 135,900 linear feet (301 acres)

Forests of Land Application Systems (LAS):

The land application system (LAS) sites owned and operated by the HCWA include spray irrigation of treated wastewater on undeveloped forests that total these approximate acreage amounts:

  • Bear Creek LAS, Phase I = 60 acres
  • Bear Creek LAS, Phase II = 160 acres
  • Indian Creek LAS = 236 acres
  • Walnut Creek LAS, Phase I = 500 acres
  • Walnut Creek LAS, Phase II = 581 acres

In all, the HCWA is responsible for obtaining and preserving more than 8,500 acres of green space in the form of reservoirs, buffers, wetlands, forested spray fields, and related properties, which will be forever protected from development.
