HCWA Hosting Third Annual Cubihatcha Kids Fishing Day

The Henry County Water Authority (HCWA), the HCWA Cubihatcha Outdoor Education Center, and the Henry County Outdoor Education Partnership – a 501-c-3 non-profit subsidiary of the HCWA in partnership with the Henry County Board of Education – will be hosting the third annual Cubihatcha Kids Fishing Day on Saturday June 8, at its Cubihatcha Outdoor Education Center and adjacent Long Branch Reservoir.

This free day of fishing features a friendly competition among those children and youth in attendance who are between the ages of 3 to 17. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m., and the fishing will commence at 7:00 a.m. The weigh-in to determine the day’s winners will be held at 11:30 a.m., but families are free to fish the rest of the day until the reservoir closes at 4:00 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for the top catches during the day, including:

* Biggest Catch of the Day

* 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place catches by kids 6 years old and under

* 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, place catches by kids between the ages of 7 to 12

* 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, place catches by kids between the ages of 13 to 17

Guests must bring their own bait and tackle for fishing, which will be limited to the banks of the Long Branch Reservoir. The Cubihatcha Center and Long Branch Reservoir are located at 100 Collins Road in Locust Grove. The Long Branch Reservoir is well stocked with catfish, bass, bream, and crappie.

The HCWA and its partners host this event annual to engage youth in outdoor recreation and education, while encouraging physical wellness, building social skills among youth, and providing emotional benefits to local children and their families.

No fishing license is required for the event, since this is one of the designated days of the year when the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) allows fishing on Georgia waters without a license, to promote the sport of fishing and encourage outdoor recreation within the state.

The Cubihatcha Outdoor Education Center is the focal point of the HCWA’s public outreach and education. Proceeds from the Cubihatcha Kids Fishing Day support outdoor educational programming, including field trips held every September for the “Cubihatcha Kids” – 3rd graders in Henry County Schools.
