HCWA Recognizes Local Winner of Metro Water District Essay Contest

During its January Meeting, the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) Board of Directors honored the local winner of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District’s 22nd annual Essay Contest.

According to the Metro Water District, Hampton Middle School student Teniola Ogungbamila received the Henry County award for her “exemplary essay that explores how a clean, abundant water supply is critical to the health and livelihoods of people across the globe.”

During the January HCWA Board Meeting, Ogungbamila read her essay to the HCWA Board after sharing her appreciation of water resources and the inspiration behind her winning essay. She is one of 15 winners from the respective counties making up the Metro Water District, who were all recognized at the Georgia State Capitol last month.

More than 700 students from across the region participated in this year’s Metro Water District Essay Contest. The students were asked to write a 300-500-word essay about local river basins throughout the district. Ogungbamila’s essay was titled: “Water Matters!” Her teacher at Hampton Middle School is Ms. Jada Byrd.

“This contest enables young students to really think about the water in their community,” says Lindsey Sanders, HCWA Communications and Regulatory Coordinator. “Teniola loves to write, and it’s awesome how she used her gift to share a message about protecting our water resources.”

For over two decades, the Metro Water District has held this annual Essay Contest as an education and outreach activity to challenge thousands of middle school students to think critically about the conservation and protection of water resources in their community and throughout the region.

“We are thrilled by the quality of the essays we received this year and by the level of participation across the region,” says Sarah Skinner, District Manager. “The responses not only illustrate the depth of knowledge participants are gaining through this research, but also their passion for preserving and protecting our local water systems so we can continue to enjoy access to clean, safe water.”
