HCWA hosting Water Works Experience for rising 9th graders

To educate the public on the essential work of its employees, while recruiting the next generation of water professionals, the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) is hosting a “Water Works” Experience for rising 9th graders in the community. This summer camp for local students is the first of its kind at the Authority.

The HCWA “Water Works” Experience will take place during the week of July 10-13, 2023, with daily sessions lasting from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The students will receive an up-close look at HCWA operations by touring various Authority facilities each day of the summer camp, including a Water Treatment Plant, a Wastewater Treatment Plant, a Reservoir, and more.

The overall goal of the “Water Works” Experience, according to Authority officials, is to introduce students to the possibility of a career in the water industry, its benefits, and how they can make a difference in the health and safety of their community. More specifically, the summer camp intends to help students brush up on professional/career development skills needed to enter today’s workforce.

During the daily sessions and VIP tours of HCWA facilities, campers will learn about watershed protection, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and other aspects of the Authority’s operations, while also learning about the school subjects and skills necessary to give them a head start on employment after graduation.

Specific activities the students will enjoy, include:

* A tour and boat ride on a Water Authority drinking water reservoir.

* Additional VIP tours of HCWA water and wastewater treatment plants.

* Water testing in the utility’s award-winning water quality laboratory.

* Mock interviews with HCWA managers and tips on writing/building their resume’.

* Q & A sessions with HCWA employees on their respective roles as essential workers in the community.

Admission is free and lunch will be provided by the Water Authority each day of the summer camp. Space is limited, so campers are encouraged to register by June 16, 2023. Registration forms are available here, and for more information, interested participants can contact the Authority at 770-957-6659.
